Man and van vs removals company: which do you need?
If you are moving home or shifting a few items, you have two main choices: book a man and van, or hire a full removals company. They overlap, but they suit very different jobs — and picking the wrong one either costs you more than it should or leaves you short-handed on the day.
Here is a plain-English comparison of how they differ on price, crew, van size, packing and insurance, and a simple way to decide which is right for your move.
Man & van vs Removals company at a glance
| Man & van | Removals company | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small moves, single items, student & flat moves | Whole-house moves, lots of furniture |
| Typical crew | Driver, or driver + one helper | Two to four movers |
| Van size | Transit up to Luton van | Luton van(s) or larger, multiple trips |
| Packing | You usually pack; help can be added | Full or part packing service available |
| Furniture dismantling | On request | Standard part of the service |
| Relative cost | Lower — you pay for a van and the hours used | Higher — more crew, vehicles and time |
| Insurance | Goods in transit & public liability (with us) | Goods in transit & public liability |
What a man and van actually is
A man and van is exactly that: a van plus a driver (and often a second pair of hands) for smaller, quicker jobs. It is the right tool for a studio or one-bed flat move, a single large item like a sofa or wardrobe, a student move, a marketplace or store collection, or moving a few boxes between addresses.
You generally do your own packing, and you pay for the van and the time or trip rather than a big crew. With Signature, man-and-van work is still fully insured (goods in transit and public liability) and handled with transit blankets and straps — it is smaller, not more careless.
What a full removals company does
A removals company is built for whole-home moves. You get a larger crew, a bigger van (or more than one), and services like full or part packing, furniture dismantling and reassembly, and careful room-by-room loading and placement at the other end.
It costs more because there is more labour, more vehicle and more time involved — but for a three-bed house full of furniture, it is far quicker, safer and less stressful than trying to stretch a single man and van across multiple trips.
The cost difference, honestly
A man and van is usually the cheaper option because you are paying for one van and the hours or trip, not a multi-person crew. A full removal costs more, but for a large move it is often better value per item moved — one well-staffed day beats four exhausting man-and-van runs that each cost you time and travel.
We quote both the same way: a clear price agreed before you book, based on your inventory, postcodes, floors and access — never a fixed hourly rate that punishes a tricky staircase.

Frequently asked questions
Is a man and van cheaper than a removals company?
Usually, yes — a man and van means one van and the hours used, rather than a full crew and larger vehicles. For a small move it is the better-value choice; for a whole house, a full removal is often better value per item moved and far quicker.
Can a man and van move a whole house?
A small house can sometimes be done with a Luton man and van over a couple of trips, but for a full family home a proper removals crew is quicker, safer and usually better value. Send us your inventory and we will advise honestly which fits.
Do you offer both?
Yes. Signature provides both man-and-van and full house removals from our Harlington base, so we can recommend the right option for your move rather than pushing you toward the bigger job.
