How to dispose of a fridge or freezer in the UK
Fridges and freezers aren’t ordinary bulky waste — they contain refrigerant gases that have to be removed safely by a licensed handler, which is why you can’t just leave one out. Here’s how to get rid of a fridge or freezer legally in the UK.
Why fridges need special handling
Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases (and older ones, insulation gases) that are harmful if released, so they must be degassed and recycled through the correct WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) channels. They can’t go in your normal waste or most skips, and fly-tipping one risks a significant fine.
1. Council bulky-waste / WEEE collection
Most councils collect fridges and freezers for a fee, booked online. They route them to a licensed facility for safe degassing and recycling. Expect a short wait for a slot.
2. Your local recycling centre (HWRC)
Household Waste Recycling Centres accept fridges and freezers for free in most areas, handling the gases correctly. Check your council’s booking and vehicle rules.
3. Retailer take-back with a new appliance
When you buy a new fridge or freezer, the retailer will usually take the old one away under WEEE rules, often free. Ask at purchase.
4. Same-day collection by a licensed carrier
If you need it gone quickly and don’t want to move a heavy appliance, a registered waste carrier will collect it and route it through the correct WEEE channels for safe degassing and recycling, with a waste transfer note for your records.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a fridge in a skip?
No — fridges and freezers are classed as hazardous WEEE because of their gases and must be handled separately, so skip providers won’t accept them.
Why do fridges have to be handled specially?
They contain refrigerant (and sometimes insulation) gases that are harmful if released, so they must be degassed and recycled by a licensed WEEE facility.
Is fridge collection free?
Taking it to a recycling centre yourself is usually free. Council collections and private same-day removals carry a fee that depends on your area.
