How much does a man and van cost in the UK?
A man and van is the flexible, budget-friendly way to move a smaller load — a flat move, a single item, a student move or a collection. But “how much does it cost?” has no single answer, because the price depends on your specific job. Here’s what actually drives the cost, the usual ways it’s priced, and how to get an accurate quote.
What drives the price
Rather than one fixed figure, a man-and-van price is built from a few factors:
- Van size — a small transit for a few boxes costs less than a Luton van with a tail-lift for furniture.
- Crew — a driver only, or a driver plus one or two helpers for heavy or awkward items.
- Time or distance — how long the job takes, and how far between collection and delivery.
- Floors and access — stairs, no lift, long carries and tight parking all add time.
- Day and timing — weekends, month-end and short-notice jobs can be busier.
Hourly vs fixed pricing
Man-and-van work is usually priced one of two ways. Hourly pricing charges for the van and crew by the hour (often with a minimum) — fair for straightforward jobs, but it can creep up if access is awkward or traffic is bad. Fixed pricing agrees one price for the whole job up front, based on your inventory and access.
At Signature we confirm a clear price before you book, based on what’s moving, your postcodes, floors and access — so there are no hidden hourly surprises on the day.
How to get an accurate quote
The more we know, the sharper the quote. Tell us: a list of what’s moving (with rough sizes of large items), the collection and delivery postcodes, the floor levels and whether there’s a lift, and the parking situation at both ends. A couple of photos of larger or awkward items help a lot.
With that, we can recommend the right van and crew and give you a firm price — not a vague “from” figure that changes on the day.
How to keep the cost down
- Declutter first — move less and the job is quicker and cheaper.
- Pack and box everything yourself before the crew arrives, so time is spent moving, not waiting.
- Be ready at both ends, with parking sorted and a clear path.
- Be flexible on timing where you can — mid-week and mid-month are often easier.
- Combine jobs — if you also need items cleared, ask about doing it in the same visit.

Frequently asked questions
Is a man and van cheaper than a removals company?
For a smaller load, usually yes — you’re paying for one van and the hours or trip rather than a full crew and larger vehicles. For a whole house, a full removals service is often quicker and better value per item moved.
Do you charge by the hour or a fixed price?
We confirm a clear price before you book, based on your inventory, postcodes, floors and access — so you know the cost up front rather than watching an hourly meter.
Will the driver help carry my items?
Tell us the help you need and we’ll agree the crew size before the job. Loading, carrying and room-of-choice placement can all be included — just let us know about heavy or awkward items in advance.
